There are two main routes which skirt Taunton to the East and West and which join up at a later stage of the journey.
Route 1 – From the East (M5 side) of Taunton
Take the B3170, passing the Racecourse, towards CORFE
Continue on the B3170 through CORFE
Climb a hill with many bends for approx 2 miles
Emerge from an avenue of trees at the top of the hill and take the SECOND turning on your RIGHT signed WELLINGTON/ CHURCHINFORD
Pass ‘Prior’s Park’ on your right
On a left hand bend take LEFT HAND SLIP ROAD signed CHURCHINFORD and SMEATHARPE
Proceed to small cross roads and DRIVE carefully STRAIGHT ACROSS
Proceed to T junction and TURN LEFT
Pass ‘Trickey Warren’ on your right
Take next RIGHT TURN for SMEATHARPE
Follow this road right through the Village of SMEATHARPE
As you leave SMEATHARPE behind look for direction signs pointing LEFT to NEWHOUSE and UPOTTERY
TURN LEFT and follow lane (you’re nearly there!), then turn into NEWHOUSE car park
Route 2 – From the West side of Taunton
Take the road for TRULL out of Taunton
Pass through the Villages of TRULL and BLAGDON HILL
Continue on this road for approx 3 miles
Pass ‘Trickey Warren’ on your right
Take next RIGHT TURN for SMEATHARPE
Follow this road right through the Village of SMEATHARPE
As you leave SMEATHARPE behind look for direction signs pointing LEFT to NEWHOUSE and UPOTTERY
TURN LEFT and follow lane (you’re nearly there!), then turn into NEWHOUSE car park
From Honiton
Leave Honiton and take the A30 towards ILMINSTER
PASS THROUGH the Village of MONKTON
Within approx 1 mile turn left for RAWRIDGE
PASS THROUGH the village of RAWRIDGE
PROCEDE THROUGH the village of UPOTTERY, passing the War Memorial on your right
Continue on this road for approx 1½ miles
At brick Sentry Box take LEFT TURN marked NEWHOUSE ½ and SMEATHARPE ¾
FOLLOW this lane until you come to Newhouse car park (see Google Street View below)
From Ilminster
Join the A303 and travel in the direction of HONITON for approx 10 miles JUST BEYOND the point where the A303 merges into the A30 TURN RIGHT for UPOTTERY
FOLLOW twisty lane (Sandy’s Lane) to the Village of UPOTTERY
At War Memorial TURN RIGHT and follow road for approx 1½ miles
At brick ‘Sentry Box’ take LEFT TURN marked NEWHOUSE ½ and SMEATHARPE ¾
FOLLOW this lane until you come to Newhouse car park
From Axminster
From Axminster take the A358 to CHARD
At CHARD take the A30 in the direction of HONITON
FOLLOW A30 through YARCOMBE
At junction with A303 TURN LEFT and proceed for 100 YARDS
TURN RIGHT for UPOTTERY
FOLLOW twisty lane (Sandy’s Lane) to the Village of UPOTTERY
At War Memorial TURN RIGHT and follow road for approx 1½ miles
At brick ‘Sentry Box’ take LEFT TURN marked Newhouse ½ and SMEATHARPE ¾
FOLLOW this lane until you come to Newhouse car park
